Tamboran had told the Leitrim Observer last month that they are “seeking suggestions from the local community about what projects would like to benefit from the company’s community investment fund for the county.” German politician Helmut Fehr told the crowd gathered in Glenfarne last week “Don’t take the companies money it is like selling your soul.” Canadian activist and environmental scientist Jessica Ernst had also warned about grants and money being offered by the companies to ease their way in. Locals who saw of heard of the meeting with the Manorhamilton Business Forum relayed their concerns to the paper. There has been much talk of “divide and conquer” techniques used by oil and gas companies in America and Canada and locals are worried that such meetings could lead to a similar situation.
